Blonde Review: A Deep Dive into the Controversial New Film on Netflix

Introduction

Blonde is an autobiography on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Considering her life has been a topic of discussion for eons, it takes gumption to ensure that such a release is able to elicit information which prior autobiographies and documentaries have not covered previously. This movie is not for the faint hearted and I am glad to admit that this movie has been quite successful in giving the life of this innocent and badgered soul a meaning by putting a clear face to prior information that was only revealed in scattered documentaries. Although it delves less on the political complications and focuses more on the emotional nuances of the actress, it is worth a watch.

Troubled Childhood

The movie highlights her challenges from her childhood to her depressing and complicated adulthood. Most documentaries were not as adept in highlighting her childhood to how she ended up as an actress. Her childhood began on a torturous note where her father who was from Hollywood abandoned her mother as she was pregnant. After a few years, her mother Gladys goes into a depression and blames her daughter for her partner’s abandonment. In a stroke of insanity, she tries to take her daughter’s life by trying to drown her in the bathtub. A young Norma Jeane (Marilyn Monroe) manages to escape and runs to her neighbor’s house while her mother is admitted to a mental asylum and is rendered unfit to raise her daughter. Poor Norma’s life is wrecked with several moves between orphanages and foster homes.

Entry in Hollywood Hollywood in the 1940’s was one of the dirtiest industries and a grown-up Norma Jeane enacted by Ana De Armas became Marilyn Monroe by being a regular victim of the casting couch to secure the meatiest role or making entrances at bigwig film parties through her agent. There are very few autobiography movies that aptly focus on every aspect of the character’s life. If you refer to my review on Elvis, the main reason for my average review was because the movie only focused on Elvis’ relationship with his manager which leaves many other aspects of his life out. Blonde excels in this regard as it focuses on every aspect of Marilyn’s life and only weeds out “classified” information concerning her final affair for obvious reasons before she passes away at the ripe age of 36. The movie delves into how her screen name “Marilyn Monroe” was invented and how she lived by the motto that her screen name was just a character she portrayed in her movies and is not her true self.

Awesome Threesome The most discussed aspect of Marilyn Monroe’s life was her love life as she was the most beautiful girl in Hollywood. As she began to walk down the hall of fame, she began a torrid polyamorous affair with Charles “Cass” Chaplin Jr and Edward “Eddy” Robinson Jr. She was often seen out in public with them with articles of their threesomes being splashed across tabloids. Her agent warned her after significant negative publicity to not be seen with them in public and she keeps her affair private until things go awry and she gets pregnant and is forced to have an abortion amid fears that her unborn child will inherit her mother’s mental condition. The movie received a lot of flak for the insensitive manner in portraying abortions. It was especially repulsive because the movie showed Marilyn changing her mind when she was on the way to the clinic but was operated on despite her protests. Furthermore, the portrayal is highly graphic and is perfectly capable of making audiences cringe when viewing these scenes.

Who is my father?

Due to her tumultuous childhood, Marilyn often longed for close family ties. Her visits to her mother in the mental asylum were heart wrenching as her mother refused to recognize her despite repeated visits. Her innocent curiosity to know her father prevailed throughout her life because of the circumstances surrounding how her mother tried to take her life. After her affair with Cass and Eddy, she begins to receive remorseful letters from her father promising her that he will meet her in person.

Swing the Baseball Bat

Marilyn scaled further heights and met Joe DiMaggio who was a retired baseball player. Their courtship lasted 2 years which was mostly long distance before he proposed to her after the premier of Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. Marilyn was the ultimate star of the movie despite earning a measly $500 for the role as she struck a chord with audiences in the famous song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” The proposal was more of a shock to Marilyn as she was informed to expect a surprise after the premier in her hotel room where she had keen hopes of meeting her father. Instead, she finds DiMaggio waiting to propose where she reluctantly agrees. Her relationship with DiMaggio was rather superficial as the only commonality they shared was her wish to leave movies and settle down in life. However, compatibility was devoid in their relationship given the fact that DiMaggio had no understanding of her professional life considering he was marrying the sex symbol of the country. He became possessive and abusive when he was contacted by Cass and Eddy who passed him nude publicity photos of her. On an impulse he demanded that she walk out on shooting 7 Year Itch which she disregarded. He was present at the shoot of the infamous skirt lifting scene and after the shoot he physically abused her in a drunken stupor. In a documentary interview with her make up artist it was uncovered that the day after the shooting of the derogatory skirt scene, there was severe bruising found on Marilyn’s neck and body. The aftermath of that incident was a highly publicized divorce.

Magda

Post her divorce from DiMaggio she decided to focus on quality cinema by moving to New York. In 1955 at the dainty age of 29, she was discovered by Arthur Miller (Adrian Brody) who was 15 years her senior in an audition for the lead role in a play called Magda. Besotted by Marilyn, it was not long before she captured his attention, and they tied the knot in a private ceremony and moved to Maine. She became perfectly absorbed in her domesticated life and was expecting soon enough. All was going well until she had a miscarriage due to a fall on the beach which was again portrayed rather graphically. Documentaries mentioned several other reasons for the breakdown of her marriage to Arthur Miller but in the movie the other reasons are left unexplored thereby giving the story a more simplistic approach.

Some Like it Hot

After the miscarriage Marilyn’s life fell apart as she could not hold herself together. She returned to filmmaking after launching her production house together with Arthur Miller and made movies such as Prince & Showgirl and Some Like It Hot. She started drinking and taking drugs more regularly at this stage and started distancing herself from Arthur. She underwent emotional turbulence and started having emotional outbursts on the set of Some Like it Hot with constant need for prescription drugs just to keep the shoot going.

It’s Classified

Her dependence on prescription drugs and alcohol increased in 1961 after her divorce from Arthur Miller. Her affair with John F. Kennedy just before passing on in 1962 was rather dubious as documentaries depicted several theories concerning how she was involved with both John and Bobby Kennedy and how she had contacts with people based in Cuba which inferences that she was murdered considering her affair took place in the middle of the Cold War. However, the movie simplified matters by highlighting only her affair with John F. Kennedy. Furthermore, it graphically portrays how she was picked up from LA in an inebriated state one evening and flown to Washington by SS agents only to find “Mr. President” on the phone in a hotel room demanding that she fellate him. He then proceeds to rape her and is sent back to LA the same evening after having thrown up in the hotel room.

Being “Marilyn Monroe”She begins to evaluate her life being Marilyn Monroe after this experience being delirious on drugs most of the time. She has a dream about another abortion at this stage this child being John F. Kennedy’s. Although she received medical treatment from 1961 – mid 1962 from psychologist Dr. Ralph Greenson who was renowned in the film circle and underwent several therapies for drug rehabilitation, it did not stop her from committing suicide in August 1962. Documentaries describe the administration of treatment to Marilyn by Dr. Ralph was rather different compared to other celebrities due her need to experience family life. Therefore, several sessions involved her paying Dr. Ralph a visit at his residence where she spent time with his family to establish a comfort zone. This explains why most information concerning her treatment was based on 1st hand information from Dr. Ralph’s son and wife who had the pleasure of meeting her in person during her home visits. Her death in the movie is described in a confident manner compared to the controversy shrouding her death otherwise with the sequencing of events leading to her death being filmed in a rather dramatic manner.

Gone too soon

Marilyn Monroe has been the most discussed artist since entering films in 1946. Resembling a gorgeous Barbie Doll this celebrity’s life is a perfect e.g., of how looks can be deceiving. I give this movie a 4/5 rating because it covered most aspects of her life and gave audiences closure on the more complicated issues concerning her existence. However, one cannot watch this movie repeatedly due to the graphical detail which leaves even strong-minded audiences with a massive hangover.

Blonde wins Razzie for Worst Movie of 2022:
Despite opening to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, Blonde was named the Worst movie of 2022.
Blonde was misogynistic, salacious, and fallacious based on quotes issued by Razzie bosses. Lastly it was quoted for shamelessly exploiting the memory of the late actress.
Many however feel that exploitation would be a re-make of her previous roles such as Diamonds are a girls best friend and let’s face it, absolutely no actress of today has successfully emulated her roles in other contexts which proves how the legend still lives on.
